Task lighting. As the name suggests, this form of lighting is the application of focused light so that detailed work and other tasks can be performed. Task lighting illumninates work surfaces such as kitchen countertops and garage worktables. Track or recessed fixtures are also great at providing task lighting.
Ambient or general lighting fills a room or other space with balanced, even illumination. This is also known as low contrast lighting, like you’d see outside on a cloudy day. Shadows are reduced, and general lighting tends to make occupants feel relaxed and comfortable. Overhead fluorescent fixtures provide good general illumination.
Accent lighting, the third choice, tends to draw the eye toward a surface or object. This is known as high-contrast lighting, similar to a spotlight on a darkened stage. The idea is to create visual stimulation by making the focal point significantly brighter than its surrounding. Track and recessed lighting fixtures provide this type of light.
