| Lighting Fixtures |
Today’s lighting fixtures come in all shapes, sizes, and price ranges. Depending on the application and your budget, you can choose from lighting fixtures that will enhance the beauty and comfort of your home, provide a warm and inviting business environment, or keep your property safe and secure from intruders.
The first step in choosing the right lighting fixture is to look at the space to be illuminated, and determine how you want it to be lit. Is it a work area like a kitchen or workshop that needs a lot of low contrast light for performing visual tasks? Or is it a living space that calls for high-contrast lighting to increase stimulation and create a specific mood?
If you own a newer home, modern lighting fixtures give you more options. For example, fixtures like track or monorail lighting provide light to a single area, and can be moved or re-adjusted as needed. This versatility gives the homeowner the ability to change their lighting scheme at a moments notice, as they redecorate or re-arrange the layout of the room. One word of warning, however. Modern lighting fixtures tend to work best in contemporary rooms and other settings, where stark contrasts, open spaces and sharp lines are the norm.
Classic lighting fixtures, on the other hand, typically display delicate construction and ornate designs. They remind us of times gone by, and they have a handcrafted appeal that fits well with older, more traditional homes. Some examples of classic lighting fixtures include wall sconces, crystal chandeliers, and domed ceiling fixtures. Their timeless, ornate designs go well in older homes from the 1950s and earlier, but might look out of place in more modern structures.
For low-contrast work environments, overhead flourescent light fixtures are often used. High contrast rooms, on the other hand, often include a variety of lighting fixtures, including wall sconces, pendant lights, track lights, direct or indirect luminaries, and more.
If your lighting an outdoor space, still more choices confront the buyer, including low-voltage lighting, post lanterns, security lighting, spotlights, deck lights and more.
Wall sconces are a common type of wall-mounted lighting fixture for indoor use. Sconces are flexible light sources that can provide general, task or accent lighting depending on the application. Some are designed to supplement or match a dining room chandelier, while others provide lighting in bedrooms, hallways or living rooms.
Ceiling fixtures are also common in many homes. They provide general lighting that’s useful in hallways, bathrooms, bedrooms, dens, livingrooms, playrooms, garages and just about any other room in the home. Some are also equipped with fans to provide air circulation in the summer and winter months.
And if you're into saving money, a great choice in lighting fixtures is Energy Star qualified lighting. These energy efficient fixtures are available in a variety of styles, and offer the lighting color and temperature that will work best in your home or office. And since they're Energy Star qualified, they're manufactured to meet strict energy-efficiency critera, saving you money on your energy bill every year.
Whatever your needs, be sure to choose lighting fixtures that are well made, safe, and within your budget. There’s no point buying fixtures that you won’t like, or will have to replace a few years down the road because of poor materials or workmanship.
