Solar Outdoor Lighting

Solar outdoor lighting is becoming an increasingly popular way to light those exterior areas of your home that are hard to wire for electricity, or where line-voltage wiring would be unsafe for pets or small children. Solar outdoor lighting also makes good economic sense because you avoid the added expense of having an electrician visit your home to do the wiring, and best of all solar lighting costs next to nothing to operate on a daily basis. And with everyone conscious of the environment and looking for ways to go green around the house, solar outdoor lighting makes perfect sense all around.

So what are good areas around your home to utilize solar lighting fixtures?  Your back yard is a good place to start, and many homeowners install solar lights along the sidewalk or path, or in strategic areas of their flower or vegetable garden. Solar lights operate on a low voltage, so there's no danger of electrical shock if the family dog decides to make a chew toy out of one. They're also very easy to install and re-install if you decide to change your lighting layout - usually as easy as pulling the unit out of the ground and pushing it back into the ground in another spot.

Solar outdoor lighting also makes ideal security lighting. Many of these solar powered fixtures are the halogen spot or LED floodlight type that have built-in motion sensors, activating the light when there is motion in a pre-set radius of 10 to 30 feet. These are great for installing above the garage door, as the lights will come on as you approach the garage in your car.  They're also great for providing security lighting at strategic points on the outside of your home, say on the front porch, or above the back door. After all, there's nothing worse than fumbling around in the dark looking for the right key to open your front door, and with solar security lighting you'll always have abundant light available as you enter and leave your home.

Another popular solar outdoor lighting option is solar lamp posts. These can be installed at the entryway from the driveway, or from the curb up the sidewalk to the front porch. This type of lamp post lighting adds a classy accent to any home, and is a welcoming feature when guests arrive after dark. It also makes the walkway safer at night, especially in cold weather when ice can be a real hazard. And of course with a solar powered lamp post, there's no need for expensive electrical wiring or for the yard to be dug up so an electrician can install them. It's merely a matter of digging a hole for the lamp post, installing the unit, and waiting for the sun to go down!

These days you can purchase quality solar outdoor lighting from a variety of online or retail stores. Home Depot, Lowes and even Wal-Mart and Target have wide variety of this type of outdoor lighting available. You also might be surprised to find that solar lighting isn't that much more expensive than traditional lighting fixtures, especially when you factor in the savings in electricity and not having to replace those inefficient incandescent bulbs every few months.

So if you've been looking for ways to create an enjoyable and impressive outdoor environment around your home, or you want to add safety and security to your residence, you should consider the benefits of solar outdoor lighting. There are an amazing number of fixtures and styles to choose from, and you're really only limited by your budget and your imagination!
