Track Lighting

If you’re planning a remodeling project in your home, or building a new home, one important thing to consider is how you’ll be lighting the spaces inside that home. One option to consider at least some of that lighting is a track lighting system. And if you have bad memories of the clunky, sometimes tacky track lighting systems of the 70s and 80s, you might want to take a look at today’s smart and stylish track lighting fixtures.

Like most things in the home, modern track lighting systems have evolved over the years. Today’s track systems are both functional and decorative, adding value and livability to your home. Track heads are smaller and come in a variety of styles, finishes and configurations.

So where in the home would a track lighting system make sense, you may be asking yourself. Just about any room could take advantage of a track system, including livingrooms, the kitchen, hallways, and even the garage. Track lighting is also a great choice in rooms where electrical service in ceiling limits your lighting placement options. One advantage of a track is its ability to handle multiple fixtures in a linear configuration, allowing one electrical access point to supply fixtures in many parts of the room.

Another important consideration is the type of lighting that will be required in that space. Because of it’s inherent flexibility, a track lighting system can provide general, accent or task lighting. Track heads can be turned and manipulated in a number of ways, allowing the user to angle light to where it’s most needed. And it can changed to another configuration whenever you redecorate or change your lighting scheme.

Track lighting fixtures are available in low-voltage and line-voltage models to fit just about any application. One advantage to low-voltage track lighting is the fact that they radiate less heat than conventional lights, keeping your rooms cooler and lowering your energy bill at the same time. A second benefit is that low voltage bulbs radiate a whiter light than many other types of conventional bulbs.

Line voltage track lights use standard wiring from your home's electrical outlets, while low-voltage units are powered by separate transformers. While standard line voltage fixtures are less expensive to buy, they use more electricity, so actually cost more in the long run, especially if you expect to be living in your home for several years into the future. There are also a variety of light sources available, including tungsten-halogen, incandescent, or energy-saving compact fluorescent bulbs.

Despite what some people may tell you, installing track lighting doesn't require major - or even minor - remodeling. And it can be configured as to your needs, depending on the area to be illuminated. Track lighting is a great way to provide task lighting into your home or office. Task lighting illuminates a space that is used for working, reading, cooking, or performing other tasks where good light is critical. Other ways to add task lighting is by adding a set of portable lamps, or installing recessed lighting in the room's walls or ceiling.

In summary, track lighting is an affordable and versatile solution for lighting designers and home remodelers. Be aware that systems such as monorail lighting and cable lighting are offshoots of track lighting, with their own unique qualities and functions.
